 What?

FLM grew out of the Bulawayo Baptist Church outreach team who have a vision to show Jesus lavishly and passionately to children and communities in Zimbabwe.

Who?

The ministry started working in the Mawabeni area of Matabeleland in June 2007.  This is a vast area with little productive land and is home to over 500 children. The ministry has a vision to reach 5 000 children in time.

Why?

Most of the children in this area have become orphans as a result of the AIDS pandemic sweeping the nation. Many are left to fend for themselves at a young age, often living in child headed households or with elderly grandparents.  Zimbabwe has the world’s fastest rising child mortality rates and the highest percentage of children who are orphaned in the world (UNICEF 2005).  Many of the population also face severe shortages of food & lack even basic medical care.

How?

This ministry works through a school-based model providing support through schools to orphans, vulnerable children and caregivers.  It seeks to work holistically to develop empowered, Jesus focused, self-sustaining communities.  (Objectives and action plans are founded on the UN principles for working in AIDS affected communities).

Now…

School fees are being paid & food packs provided for 150 orphans, 450 children have been identified as needing this support.  A field worker has been employed to work on the ground in Mawabeni.  Hair cuts are being provided for the children from schools. A ‘Farming God’s Way’ scheme is being set up. And, child sponsorship is getting underway.

The future…

There is still so much to do: funding wells, providing counselling, supporting caregivers, and providing health care, to name a few.  With gratefulness to God and reliance on Him to continue opening doors, FLM expects to see their humbling mandate fulfilled.
